Smelling Salts

Other Uses for Smelling Salts

You might know smelling salts—or ammonia inhalants—by hearing about their reputation within the athletic community, whether it was about a player in the NHL or the NFL or in powerlifting.

However, even since the beginning of their origins, smelling salts have been used for so much more than just an athletic stimulant (although it is very successful at being one).

In this article, we’re going to go through the various ways that smelling salts have been used, other than athletically.

Take a Look at History

In the past, ammonia inhalants were actually known as “lady revivers”, which were needed all-too-well from the various times women would faint due to their too-tight corsets.

Although not specifically specialized for women, the ammonia inhalants could be traced all the way back to Roman times.

Of course, they have come a long way since then. Nowadays, they often use noxious ammonia gas instead of the original gases used.

However, this aggressive sort of aromatic experience has been dubbed “aromatic assault”, when referring to the ways that athletes and lifters use smelling salts to get pumped right before a big action or play.

To make it more unique, there have been more recent uses of the ammonia salts that have been dubbed more like aromatherapy, with the main component being mixed and triggering less “violent” responses.

Smelling Salts Now

These smelling slats are now being inhaled through the recipe of fragrant air that stays around the crystals which have then received a few drops or two of essential oils.

What is the effect? Unlike the other type of inhalant that triggers that fight or flight response, these smelling salts mixed with essential oils actually calm the nervous system down and can even change up the brain function of the present moment.

The best part is? These new formulas can be used in various situations that might cause some sort of stress or anxiety. There are certain “recipes” that are tailored to various situations.

For example, smelling salts can be blended with about 20 drops of different essential oils. Depending on the situation at hand, you can vary up the mixture and unique varieties of oil. Some people have even created these mixtures and then even keep them hanging off a cord like a necklace to be of use to you when you need it the most. The mixture is such a small vial that it can easily be slipped into a pocket of a jacket or kept stowed away in your purse.

To use it effectively, you take all the different oils and then pour the 20 drops (total) onto one tablespoon of salt. Once properly mixed, you can then place it all in a vial or small container and carry with you.

For relief from anxiety: More people than you could guess deal with anxiety on a regular basis. Using this mixture of drops can definitely help you maintain calm if you feel anxiety creeping up:

  • 9 drops chamomile essential oil
  • 6 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 3 drops balsam essential oil

For relief from fear: Especially during an unfamiliar situation or if you plan on going through with something you have a phobia of (for example, entering in a closed place even though you have claustrophobia), this formula can help you keep fear at bay:

  • 10 drops rose essential oil
  • 6 drops Melissa essential oil
  • 4 drops neroli essential oil

For relief from panic: Before the panic really begins to set in, you can turn to this smelling salts aromatherapy formula:

  • 13 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 2 drops valerian essential oil

Especially since they are easy to make—just one trip to the store to pick up the various essential oils, you can easily benefit from the aromatherapy of smelling salts.

Although the athletic version of ammonia inhalants have been the most common, there are various other ways that this type of formula is used. Depending on what you’ve just inhaled, the brain can go through a variety of different receptor sites, like the limbic system (emotion), which can then have an immediate effect on your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance.

These smelling salts and various ways to use it can really help you in different situations.
